3D Lake District
The app is smoother than the video!

3D Lake District is a new app using the same type of maps as the UK Map app. It covers all of the Lake District National Park at a scale of 1:25,000. Explore the 3D landscape of England's most mountainous area as shown in the screenshots and video.
The 3D technology demonstrated here will be included in a future version of the UK Map app, with national coverage.
How to use the app:
- You can move your viewpoint around with single-finger gestures on the main part of the screen.
- Change the direction in which you're facing by swiping the heading control at the top of the screen.
- Move your viewpoint up and down, and tilt the direction in which you're looking up and down, using the controls at the sides of the screen. (To maxmise the space available for the maps, these are shown together on the right in portrait orientation and one on each side in landscape orientation.)
- Zoom in and out using two-finger pinch/unpinch gestures on the main part of the screen.
Note the subtle differences between zomming in/out and moving closer/further away, and between moving your viewpoint and changing the direction in which you're facing.
If you "lose" the map, perhaps by zooming out too far or similar, you can reset the app to a sane state by enabling the "Start in Safe Mode" switch in the app's section of the phone's main settings screen.
Apple version
Note that the app supports only the iPad, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and 3rd and 4th-generation iPod touch. The iPhone 3G and older and the iPod touch 2nd generation and older are not compatible.
UK Map is now available from Apple®'s App Store in the Navigation category for only £1.19.
Android™ Version
An Android version of this app is now available on the Android Market for only £1.19. Click here (on your device) to see the app in the Market.
If you don't have the Android Market on your device, please contact us for information about other ways to get it.
In most respects the app is identical to the Apple version. One difference is that the initial download is quite small, and that the app downloads the map data when it is first started. You will therefore need a good network connection (i.e. WiFi) and a few hundred megabytes of free space on your SD card before first using it.
This is our first attempt at an Android app - please excuse any glitches and let us know what you think!
Hardware Compatibility
Important: because of variations in the 3D graphics hardware in different Android devices, this app is not compatible with everything. Please check the following before purchase. The app is known to be compatible with the following devices which all have Imagination Technologies graphics:
- Samsung Galaxy Tab
- Motorola Defy
By extrapolation we believe that it is likely to be compatible with the following devices which have similar hardware:
- Samsung Galaxy S
- Motorola Droid
The app is known to not work with the following which have Nvidia graphics:
- Toshiba AC100
By extrapolation we believe it is probably not compatible with the following devices which have similar hardware:
- Toshiba Folio 100
- Advent Vega
It is also likely to be incompatible with all older or cheaper devices that do not have 3D graphics acceleration.
